Educational Technology, Innovation, and Sustainability in ASEAN Higher Education

Abstract

Read abstract

This chapter explores the relationship between the integration of educational technology and sustainability in education, with innovation in education practices serving as the mediating variable and institutional control as the moderating variable. Technology integration has been widely regarded as a driver of educational innovation. However, its ability to produce sustainable educational outcomes is not thoroughly researched, especially in institutional contexts with a high degree of governance. The study employs structural equation modelling and moderated mediation analysis to determine how innovation plays a critical role as a conduit between technology integration and sustainability, and the influence of institutional control conditions on these relationships. It is based on this empirical foundation that the chapter situates the integration of educational technology within culturally and politically regulated systems of higher learning in the ASEAN, where institutional leadership is subject to heavy policy supervision. The results indicate that the education leadership and institutional governance framework are significant in determining whether technology-driven innovation can produce sustainable educational outcomes over the long term. The chapter can contribute to leadership and policy discussions on sustainable education in the ASEAN and other governance-based systems of higher education through the combination of empirical modelling with illustrative case-based insights.
